Sauna Materials Calculator: Paneling, Insulation & Vapor Barrier

The calculator follows the opaque room envelope

For a rectangular sauna, gross wall area is interior perimeter multiplied by height. The calculator subtracts the door and additional glass/unlined openings, then adds the ceiling if selected. That produces the net opaque interior surface that normally receives the wall/ceiling system.

Harvia's current room-construction guidance describes 50–100 mm insulation, aluminum-paper moisture protection, an approximately 10 mm ventilation gap and 12–16 mm interior panel board as separate layers in a conventional sauna wall. This calculator estimates surface coverage; it does not choose insulation thickness or certify a wall assembly.

Glass is subtracted here but added to heater sizing

A full glass wall reduces how much wood paneling, cavity insulation and vapor-barrier surface you purchase. At the same time, glass increases the effective heating load in manufacturer heater-sizing methods. Those are opposite effects, so the same glazing should be handled differently in the two tools.

Why purchase area is larger than net area

Net area is the geometric coverage. Real orders need allowance for cuts, offcuts, defects, seams and layout. The calculator defaults to 10% but makes the percentage editable because panel lengths and room geometry can materially change waste.

A room that uses full-length boards efficiently can waste less than one with many short pieces around glazing or unusual corners. Use the supplier's exact board lengths and package coverage before placing the order.

Package and roll coverage turn square area into an order quantity

Enter how much area one paneling package or one vapor-barrier roll covers. The calculator divides the purchase area by that coverage and rounds upward to a whole package. The barrier field is prefilled with 322.9 ft² in imperial mode, equivalent to the 30 m² coverage Harvia currently publishes for SAS10001 aluminum paper.

The preset is only a convenience. Replace it when using a different barrier product.

What the materials calculator deliberately does not estimate

Use the finished interior dimensions

These are surface-area calculations for the inside of the hot room. Framing dimensions or exterior cabin dimensions can produce the wrong paneling quantity because wall thickness changes the finished interior perimeter. Finalize the interior room dimensions, door and glazing before treating the quantity as an order list.

Materials workflow

1. Finalize finished interior room length, width and height.
2. Measure the door and every glass or unlined opening.
3. Decide whether the ceiling uses the same finish/envelope system.
4. Review net paneling, insulation and barrier surface area.
5. Apply a waste/overlap allowance that fits the actual boards and room.
6. Enter supplier package/roll coverage and round upward to whole units.

Recalculate whenever openings or ceiling finish change

Moving the door, adding a window or switching one wall to full glass can change material quantities enough to affect package counts. Re-run the calculator after the final room drawings are settled rather than ordering from an early concept sketch.
