The result is bench geometry—not a marketing person count
A four-person product label does not prove that four adults will have the bench width, shoulder room or reclining length you expect. This calculator starts with the finished interior dimensions and removes the wall length you identify as unavailable because of the heater, door, guard or another constraint.
It then converts the usable straight bench runs into Harvia's 600 mm seated-space modules. The wording is deliberate: a 600 mm module is a planning benchmark, not a guarantee that every corner, body size or social seating arrangement works exactly the same way.

Why the heater/door deduction is user-entered
A six-foot wall is not automatically a six-foot bench. A wall-mounted heater and guard can consume one end of the run; a door can interrupt another wall; glazing or controls can alter the layout. Different heaters have materially different clearance envelopes, so a fixed automatic deduction would create false precision.

L-shaped layouts avoid counting the shared corner twice
For an L shape, the calculator reports the modules on each run and subtracts one module when both runs have usable seating. That is a conservative way to keep the corner from being counted as two independent seats. The actual corner may be more or less useful depending on bench depth, backrests, heater placement and how people sit.
Reclining is checked against the longest uninterrupted run
If one regular user wants to lie down, the relevant question is not whether the sauna is sold as a four-person room. The calculator compares your desired reclining length with the longest usable straight upper-bench run after the reserved length has been removed.
A deep bench also matters. Harvia recommends 600 mm or more when lying down or sitting with feet on the bench is important.
Bench elevation is a geometry result, not a structural prescription
The upper-bench elevation is simply ceiling height minus your selected bench-to-ceiling space. The calculator checks that headroom against Harvia's 1100–1200 mm recommendation. It does not decide lower-bench height, step construction, structural support or heater guarding.

Use interior—not exterior—dimensions
Wall thickness, glass frames, barrel geometry and panel construction can make the hot room smaller than the outside footprint. The dimensions entered here should describe the finished interior volume where benches and equipment actually fit.
Use the calculator to compare two layouts on equal terms
A straight bench may produce more uninterrupted reclining length, while an L-shaped layout can create more total seated-space modules. Run both layouts with the same room and reserved heater/door deductions. The comparison is often more useful than choosing a shape from photos because it makes the trade-off between linear length and corner seating explicit.

How deep should an upper sauna bench be?
Harvia recommends at least 500 mm, about 19.7 inches. For reclining or sitting with feet on the bench, Harvia recommends 600 mm or more.
How much space should be above the upper bench?
Harvia recommends approximately 1100–1200 mm, about 43–47 inches, between the upper bench and ceiling. The calculator checks your selected target against that range.
Does this calculator verify heater safety clearances?
No. Enter the wall length consumed by the heater, door, guard or other unusable area. The exact heater manual still controls safety clearances and required guarding.
