Whole-sauna decision tool

Sauna Selector

Use your location, preferred heat, capacity, space, electrical service and budget to narrow the purchase to a sauna category that fits the project. The result is a selection profile, not a paid product ranking.

What the selector is actually deciding

Indoor infrared cabin

Compact cabins can be practical where 240V service is not available. Golden Designs currently lists multiple 1–2 person models for 120V/15A service, but exact circuits and indoor-use restrictions remain model-specific.

Indoor traditional sauna

Traditional electric sauna rooms use a stone heater and commonly require a hardwired 240V circuit. The room construction, glass area and heater's published room range matter more than nominal person capacity.

Outdoor barrel sauna

A barrel can package a traditional sauna into a compact outdoor structure. It trades rectangular wall/bench geometry for a curved shell, so bench layout and advertised capacity deserve a close look.

Outdoor cabin or cube

Rectangular outdoor designs usually provide more conventional bench and wall geometry. They can require more footprint and site work but can be easier to evaluate for usable interior dimensions.

Custom sauna room

Custom construction gives the most control over bench height, insulation, ventilation and glazing. It also puts more responsibility on design, trades, electrical work and heater sizing.

Wood-burning outdoor sauna

Wood heat can remove the electric-heater load but adds chimney, clearance, combustion and local-code considerations. It should be treated as a separate installation path, not merely a heater swap.

Why electrical service can change the shortlist

Current manufacturer examples show why the selector cannot treat every home sauna the same. Golden Designs lists compact two-person infrared cabins that use 120V/15A service, while Almost Heaven states that its standard traditional heater options use a hardwired 240V connection and commonly draw 30–40 amps. Redwood Outdoors likewise lists 240V heater service on its traditional barrel saunas.

The selector therefore treats a 120V-only project differently from a project where 240V is already available or an electrical upgrade is acceptable. It never assumes that a category-level recommendation proves a specific model fits the circuit.

Use space measurements before person-count marketing

Capacity labels are useful for quick browsing, but they do not tell you whether two adults can recline, whether a bench clears a doorway, or whether a six-person label means six comfortable bathers in your preferred seating arrangement. Redwood Outdoors, for example, describes the capacity of its 8-person barrel as 6–8 depending on seating arrangement and bather size and publishes the exterior dimensions separately.

For a serious purchase, compare the actual footprint and interior bench geometry after the selector has narrowed the category. The home sauna guide, outdoor sauna guide and barrel sauna guide separate those decisions so one broad page does not try to own every intent.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Sauna Selector recommend individual models?

The selector ranks sauna categories and purchase paths from the information entered. Exact model fit still depends on current manufacturer dimensions, electrical requirements and installation instructions.

Can a 120V circuit support a home sauna?

Some compact infrared cabins are manufacturer-listed for 120V service, while traditional electric sauna heaters commonly use 240V. The exact product specification controls.

Why does the selector ask about usable space?

Advertised person capacity does not describe the actual footprint, bench length or access space. Available width, depth and height can eliminate otherwise attractive options.

Does the result change because a merchant pays a commission?

No. The selection profile is calculated from the inputs first. Commercial links are shown only after the result and do not change the category ranking.
